Lakeview
Lakeview includes, and overlaps with, several smaller neighborhoods within
its boundaries, which run from Diversey on the south to Irving Park Road on the North and
stretches west to Ravenswood. Along the lake, Lake View includes the neighborhoods of
Diversey and Belmont Harbors.
Named for its close proximity to Lake Michigan, Lakeview is one of Chicago's larger
neighborhoods, now comprised of smaller neighborhoods within its boundaries. They include
Wrigleyville, Lakeview and Lakeview East.
The name Lakeview is thought to have come from the Hotel Lakeview, built on the lakeshore
in 1853. By 1887 the town of Lakeview was incorporated into the city. About four miles
north of the Loop, Lakeview is one of the most livable neighborhoods in Chicago. Many
people have moved into Lakeview in recent years, and the nightclubs and restaurants have
followed.
It is home to a large part of Chicago's gay community known as Boys Town located on
Halsted Street between Belmont and Waveland. The windows are full of rainbow stickers, a
symbol for gay-friendliness. The annual Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade is held here in
June. Chicago's city government recently paid for the installation of rainbow-colored
pylons along Halsted.
